General Information

We are looking forward to a great 2019 season. From summer courses, to adult lessons, to powerboating lessons, you can book and pay through our new booking engine. Please find the course and dates which you'd like to do and follow the steps for registration and payment. This booking engine is part of the Checklick system so when you register for certain courses you will be given an Irish Sailing Passport where all your sailing and powerboating endeavours can be logged and added to as you progress through the sports. Please locate the level you wish to book, then pick the dates that you'd like. Each Course is broken into two payment instalments to allow someone to just pay a deposit. However if you wish to pay in full straight away by all mean do, just click both instalments. Also remember that If your booking an additional week or weeks they are discounted at only €200 be sure to go down to the discount section and apply the €70 off discount, and also we have a 10% discount for siblings so a second, third, etc can avail of this, so again please click this in the discount section. If a student has already been register through the Irish Sailing Passport (Checklick) after typing in their name, DOB, and the associated email address the system should find their profile, making booking easier in the future. A. Taste of Sailing (TOS)

Taste of sailing (TOS):  A short introduction to the thrills and spills of sailing, this course will provide you with a flavour of the sport in a controlled, safe environment. Aim: The aim of this brief introductory course is to give you a positive introduction to the thrill of sailing. Experience: No prior experience or knowledge is required, we suggest that 9 years is a reasonable starting age, all sailors must be able to swim. Where time allows, this course may be linked straight into Start Sailing which is the next module you should complete. Duration: 5 days. Boat Used: Topaz Uno. Dublin Bay Mermaids, 570 Keelboats. Assessment: Continuous throughout the course.

B. Start Sailing (SS)

Aim: By the end of this course you will be sailing in light wind conditions with assistance from your instructor. Previous experience: You should be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge learned in Taste Of Sailing. Boat Used: Topaz Uno, Dublin Bay Mermaids. Duration: 5-10 days Boats used: Topaz Uno, Dublin Bay Mermaids. Assessment: Assessment is continuous throughout the course. However, your instructor may also choose to use a formal practical assessment of boat handling skills and a short written paper or oral interview in assessing your level of background knowledge.

D. Improving Skills (IS)

Improving skills (IS) Aim: To develop the skills and knowledge you need in order to set up and sail the boat more effectively in moderate conditions. This module will also prepare you for the specialist modules ahead. Previous experience: You will be expected to have completed, or have experience equivalent to the basis skills course and have been sailing regularly. If you have not been regularly practising these skills you will need to do so prior to this module or extend the length of the course to allow you to do so. Duration: 10 days. Boats used: Topaz Uno, Dublin Bay Mermaids. Assessment: Continuous throughout the module. Your instructor may, however, choose to use a formal practical session of boat handling skills and a short written paper or oral interview to assess your level of background knowledge.

Advanced boat handling(ABH) Aim: To develop advanced boat handling and tuning skills and prepare you to sail flat out in strong winds. Previous knowledge/experience: You must have completed the Improving Skills module and been sailing regularly. If not you will need to practise prior to the course or extend its duration. Duration: 10 days. Boat Used: Dublin Bay Mermaids, Topaz Uno, National 18. Assessment: Assessment is continuous throughout the course. your instructor may, however, choose to use a formal practical assessment of boat handling skills and a short written paper or oral interview in assessing your level of background knowledge.

Kites and Wires (KW) Aim: To introduce you to the thrills and spills of sailing with spinnakers and trapezes. Adventure Skills Aim: To introduce you to the skills and knowledge you will need in order to undertake longer trips and to sail in stronger winds. Previous knowledge/experience: You will be expected to have completed or have experience equivalent to the Improviving Skills module and have been sailing regularly, as with other modules lack of regular sailing will necessitate pre module practice or longer course duration. Duration: 5-10 days. Boats Used: Dublin Bay Mermaids. Topaz Uno, 570 Keelboats. Assessment: Continuous, however, your instructor may also choose to use a formal practice session for boat handling skills and a short written paper or oral interview to assess background knowledge.

H. Cara na Mara (CnM)

An on the water and shoreside training programme that delivers the basics sailing skills, seamanship, environmental awareness and science for 6 to 10 year olds. Cara na Mara is a child focused approach to introducing sailing to children, allowing children to discover, explore and practice the skills and knowledge they will need as sailors while under the leadership and supervision of Irish Sailing qualified instructors and within an Irish Sailing recognised training centre. There is a strong emphasis on allowing the sailors to appreciate and enjoy the water and outdoor environment safely. This year the weeks that Cara na Mara will be running are from the 22nd July till the 9th of August (3 weeks). Places are limited.

I. Full on Adventure Course (FAC)

This course involves five days of sailing with 4 nights of camping around the islands of Roaring Water Bay. Students will not only about Adventure sailing, navigation, but also camp skills and sustainable camping, along with teamwork, etc. The course is for 14 yrs to 17yrs only. All food and shelter is provided. The boats used are the 570 keelboats. Places are limited.
